CHAPTER TEN
Hiking Day
âScarlett!â I ignored my uncleâs call to me as I quickly walked towards the door of the Lodge. Let them think what they wanted to; I had a crush on a boy for the first time, had my first kiss, and it did not matter to me anymore. I went hiking with my family and picked up some rocks and anything I thought my little brother would like. Rhett was always picking up rocks and anything that looked interesting to him and put it in a box. He would have loved being here for this. I missed him. I knew he had wanted to stay behind instead of coming to the ranch, but I missed the little guy.
As I picked up another interesting rock, my mom came up to me.
âFor Rhett?â she asked.
âYes, he told me to get him something interesting,â I said. As I picked up a part blue and part grey rock, mom took it from my hand.
âRick, is this what youâre talking about?â Mom asked him. Rick was our guide. I had thought this was a standard hike, but everyone was moving slow. I hadnât been paying attention to anything. Rick came over and looked at the rock and took it from my mom.
âYes, this is what Iâm talking about. Everyone come look,â Rick began, and everyone gathered around us. âSee the blue. This is raw Sapphire, a perfect piece. Since you are the first one to find a sapphire, Andy said you could give it to him, and he will make you a sapphire necklace before you leave.â
âWow,â I said.
âWhen we get back, take it to Andy, he will ask what you want him to make out of it,â Rick said, smiling.
Everyone started looking in earnest again.
âWhat do you want him to make you?â Mom asked.
âI donât know.â I reached into my pocket, took hold of the rocks I had put there and studied them. Mom took one of the stones and brought her water bottle out and put water on it, and it turned blue. The whole rock was blue. âIs that?â I asked.
âRick,â Mom yelled again.
Rick ran back to us to see what we had âWhere did you find it at?â he asked.
âBy that big rock back this way,â I said and started walking while everyone followed. âThereâs more, this was the biggest one I found.â
When we went back to that spot, there were enough sapphire stones to go around. The hikers gathered them up before returning in time for lunch, and I was so hungry. Rick came up to me with my mouth half full of sandwich and pointed to where Andy was standing. âBetter give him the stone,â and he walked away.
Andy came to the table while we were trying to swallow; I put down my ham and cheese and grabbed my bag of chips. âHeard you found the first sapphires,â Andy stated. âShow me what you found, and Iâll make you what you want.â
I pulled the rocks out of my pocket and had more than I thought.
